Liverpool Lime Street station is undergoing a major transformation – its biggest upgrade since the 19th Century. The next phase starting in June 2018 will see Network Rail carry out vital railway upgrades to enable the station to cater for a significant increase in passenger numbers during peak periods over the coming years.

The work, which began in 2017, is a key part of the £340m railway investment in the Liverpool City Region, which sits within the Great North Rail Project.

During the works engineers will be remodelling station platforms, increasing them in number and in length. Overhead line equipment will also be installed/renewed to power electric trains and changes will be made to provide extra services.

This is the last major phase of this programme at Liverpool Lime Street Station, which requires the station to be fully or partially closed. Once work is complete in October this year, passengers will be able to enjoy three new services per hour, including new direct services to Scotland, more reliable services, safer, wider platforms and a re-modelled concourse.

What you need to know about your journeys
Journeys through Lime Street station will be affected for eight weeks, from 2nd June to 29th July. During the works, you will still be able to get where you want to go whether you are travelling for work, leisure, or for business, it will just mean you need to make some simple changes to your journey.

The plan is to keep passengers on trains wherever possible, diverting many mainline rail services to Liverpool South Parkway and getting people to and from the city on the Merseyrail ‘metro’ network. Where rail replacement buses are required, they will be high quality, and offer express options, to make sure you can complete your journey as quickly as possible. A map showing an overview of services available during each closure phase can be found here.

More detailed information is included in the sections below. You should also visit the Network Rail website and also take note of the important timetable information below.

Important information you need to know about timetables
Due to the upcoming May timetable changes, you are advised to plan your journey using the information provided below and on the Network Rail website. It is important, where possible, to check times up to a month before, in the run up to and just before you travel as they may change. More information on why times are not yet available can be found on the National Rail website.
